My mother tried to teach me to sew and knit, and made me take home-ec with Mrs. Gillespie (shiver), but it just didn’t work. The clothing I made was unwearable and the crafts self-destructed. I thought I had escaped when I grew up, but then my children became craftsy and made me take them to fabric stores. It was hell.
Now, however, I have discovered a kind of fabric store I can deal with. In Paris, you pick your fabric, and they’ll make you whatever you want! Curtains, linens, you name it and they’ll sew it! The work is excellent and the prices are quite reasonable for custom designs. They have a boatload of Christmas fabric, so you can order up your matching tablecloth-napkin-runner combo and they’ll call you when it’s done. Genius.
