This is a Guest Ghost Post. It’s a guest post because the experience was not mine, it was my husband’s. But he doesn’t write, so I ghost-wrote it for him. I don’t think he writes at all. In fact, the only things he reads are Harry Potter and the Bible. One of the many reasons we get along!

On his last trip to Hong Kong, his hometown, he tried a Michelin star restaurant, a dim sum place called Tim Ho Wan. He promises to take me when we next go to Hong Kong. I’ve never eaten in a Michelin-anything restaurant!

I named this blog Escaping the Empty Nest because, now that my children are leaving home, I want to get out in the world and explore instead of sitting home sad waiting for the kids to come back for Thanksgiving. (That was my first inclination.) We’ve made some terrific plans, and will hit the road in a couple of months.

However, I’m not the first one to think of this. My friend Lynn is already doing it, but with a charitable twist.

My swimsuit rule number one: always stand in the back row when wearing your suit. Nothing to hide, just don’t want to flaunt it.

When I travel, I find no shame in visiting MacDonalds. It’s reliable, cheap and it fills you up. The decor is pretty standard, worldwide. You can get nuggets and fries, or if you’re somewhere exotic you can sample the local specialities (like taro pie in Beijing or Tzaziki McWrap in Hungary).

Housing First: LA

I really believe in housing first. That’s the theory that getting homeless people into their own homes should be the first step toward ending homelessness, not the eventual goal. For example, the state of Utah has almost eliminated homelessness this way. In 2005, the local government in Salt Lake City realized that it cost the city $20,000 per year to care for a person on the streets (ambulance, ER visits, shelters, police) but it only cost $8,000 per year to house a person. They built new apartments and renovated existing apartments for homeless people to move into. After moving in, residents were offered health care, job search resources, and substance abuse treatments. Now, the homeless rate in Utah has dropped 91%.

What’s a book about urban planning doing in a travel blog? When I travel, I like to observe people’s way of life: their culture, their transportation, houses, markets. When you see what people do on a daily basis and where they do it, you get to know them. This book helps me understand people better, which is one of my joys of travel.
