Romanesco

I actually like romanesco.  It has the crunchy texture of cauliflower, but it’s green so I suppose it has more nutrients.  My math friends have pointed out the it also utilizes the fibonacci sequence, which makes this a very cool vegetable for math people.  I just think it’s beautiful. I did my usual blanch/stir fry with butter and salt routine. Totally edible.

Have you tried it? Opinion? Yes? No?

I asked my friend Anne to write me this guest post.  She and her family go RVing, something our family has never tried. She makes it sound good, though!

City Quiet - New York

I really like the quiet you find in a city.  It’s different from country-quiet.  I spent a lot of time growing up on my grandmother’s farm just outside Loving, Texas, and that was quiet within quiet.  There was the quiet of the house, quiet of the yard, quiet of the surrounding fields and the road with very few cars, quiet of the neighboring farms and sleepy Loving down the road.  Layers of quiet.  You had to work to get out of the quiet. Even if you screamed in an effort to make noise, it was immediately swallowed up and negated by the quiet.

My CSA box comes with some odd and wonderful things.  When this Herbal Infusion popped out of the box, I was confused.  I’ve seen the word “infusion” all over the place, but had no idea it could be attempted at home. The directions instructed me to gently smash the herbs then put them in water, refrigerate, drink.  I infused!  It was quite refreshing.  My son called it Weed Water.

What do you do when your husband goes on a business trip, your teenagers will survive without you for a few days, and the baby goes to camp? You meet your bff from high school in a beautiful place, that’s what you do.  That’s why I went to Taos, New Mexico, with Michelle. Her husband Albert came along to drive us around.

It’s story time! Today, kids, I’ll be reading you a story that is an old family favorite. My children enjoyed this book immensely when they were little, and it reminded me to make my home a place that reflects who I am and what I love. If you’re an empty nester who loves to be at home, I hope this video inspires you, too!

Please enjoy this little movie of our mini-vacation in Monterey. Sam and I got a few days away while Caleb went to camp, and we left the teenagers home to fend for themselves. This was a trial run for the empty nest that is coming down the pipe, and it was a success!

Sorry, jicama, but I didn’t recognize you in the store and I made fun of you. Identifying someone by their exterior physical characteristics is never acceptable, especially if you imply that that physical trait sums up the totality of their existence. I’m sorry! I should know better than to judge a vegetable by its outer appearance. I’ll try to be more sensitive next time. Would it help if I told you that I have enjoyed you many times in restaurants, but never knew that I could buy and prepare you myself at home? From now on I will enjoy you at home AND in restaurants!

Does anyone have any jicama experience they’d like to share?

I hate cooking, but I love to see my family eat.  Therefore, I’ve developed a lot of simple recipes that don’t take a lot of time or ingredients, but do keep folks happy.  When my daughter went away to college, the thing she said she missed most was my simple dinners!  Awwww! That was an amazing statement, considering how much I hate being in the kitchen. It’s true, people do tend to eat whatever I put on the table.
