Update: Homeschooling the Ferris Bueller Year

In my previous post about this homeschool project, I decided not to call it a gap year, but a Ferris Bueller Year. “Gap year” sounds like you’ve dropped off the face of the earth, but “Ferris Bueller year” sounds like you shucked off society to go do something that was good for you. Kid 3 is a year too young for his grade, so we decided to take him out of school for a year between middle and high school and travel while we let him catch up. So far, so good!

This is my first Christmas in Europe, so it’s my first time to visit Vienna’s Christmas markets. I have been to several of them this season, and they are every bit as lovely as I had imagined. I plan to go to several more. But why? I’ve finished my Christmas shopping, the weather’s colder than a witch’s elbow, and the crowds are massive. Why would an introvert put herself through that?

A Vegetable

Not “a vegetable” but the “A” vegetable. There is not B vegetable or C vegetable, but there is the A vegetable. It looks like romaine lettuce without the bony white stalk, and it’s mild enough to eat raw in salads. As pictured here, it also stir fries up beautifully. I took this picture in Din Tai Fung in Taipei, and then I ate everything in sight.
