Sinfonietta Paris is a Paris chamber music organization that sponsors a series called Music by the Glass. It features intimate concerts in lovely concert halls and private homes throughout the city. The concerts last about one hour so you won’t be overwhelmed, and after the concert there are wine and snacks, included in the ticket price. You can meet the performers and mingle with the audience.
This series makes music approachable. Before the concert, the director, Michael Boone, tells you about the music (in English with French translation) so you know what you’re in for. The performers are all young people, graduates of some of the best conservatories in the world, and currently working in orchestras or embarking on solo careers.

Who would enjoy these concerts? Pretty much everybody.

Date night? Impress your date with your classiness by taking them to to a beautiful venue, where you’ll listen to music while mingling with other elegant people, drinking wine and noshing on cheese. If it’s a first date, those awkward pauses won’t happen because you’ll either be listening to music or talking about it afterward. That also goes for you old married people who forgot how to talk about anything except your kids and the gas bill. Put some spark in your relationship with a fun evening out!

Girls night out? Going to the movies is great, but it’s time to break out of your routine and do something different. Reserve your tickets online, put on your heels, meet at the concert, enjoy the wine and cheese, and leave feeling sophisticated. Your friends rock, and so does this music.

Relatives are in town and they’re making you crazy? Take Aunt Becky and Uncle Hank to a concert! They’ll be thrilled to do something highbrow and, best of all, you won’t have to talk to them during the concert. Afterwards, put a wine glass in their hands and introduce them to some other expats. They’ll be off your hands until bedtime.

Budding young music lovers?  With Music by the Glass’s shorter concert length, your teenager can get in touch with the finer things in life with nary an eye roll. These concerts do not contain violence, gore, or bad language, but they are rated PG-13 for attention span and ability to control fidgeting. You always wanted your kid to know about classical music, and this is your chance.

Going solo? Chamber music appeals to many people’s introverted natures, and this is the perfect place to indulge your Inner Beethoven. Bring a book to read while the audience arrives, listen to the sublime sounds, and then decide whether you want to have some wine and strike up a conversation with that interesting redhead, or quietly go home, humming and fulfilled. You have choices.
